Autism Support / Autism Specialist Teacher

I am a specialist Autism/SEND teacher. I have been working with autistic children and adults since 2013. I currently work in a complex needs primary school in Bexley. In 2023, I completed a Master’s degree in Education (Autism) at London South Bank University. I am also the mother of an autistic boy who has learning disabilities, and I consider myself a non-diagnosed autistic woman.

I am passionate about sharing my experience and expertise with other families. I would like to offer you a set of tools that enable you to support your child in the best possible way. I will share with you techniques for working with children to support their communication, development and independence.

Child-centred support

I believe that supporting our children by following their lead and focusing on their strengths brings much better results than trying to “fix” their weaknesses. Our children are the best people to show us what to do to support them, and the best way to do it. They are our best teachers. We need to allow their strengths to shine while minimising their challenges.

Neurodiversity approach

I look at autism as a set of neurological and cognitive differences. Autistic scientist Wenn Lawson describes it as a spectrum of “diff-ability” (different ability) rather than a dysfunction or disorder. Being autistic, or raising an autistic child, can be difficult and challenging. However, it’s not a child who is challenging; it is often the environment that is challenging for them. We have a choice: to change our children to fit the environment or to change the environment, the type of support, and teaching methods to fit the child.

Developmental learning

Our children are on unique developmental paths, different from their neurotypical peers. It is our responsibility to recognise these differences and adapt our support and teaching methods to their specific developmental stages, ability to focus their attention, and readiness for learning. We need to meet our children where they are and help them develop skills that are achievable at their current level.
